What is HDPE?
High Density Polyethylene. We select a high grade polymer
suitable for wine storage.
HDPE should not be confused with LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) which
is commonly used in water storage tanks.
Does the polyethylene taint the wine?
No. There are now millions of litres stored in Flextank tanks and barrels. Taint is not a problem. The polyethylene used is a food grade product.
Where are the tanks and barrels manufactured?
All tank and barrel manufacture is carried out in Auckland. We
support New Zealand manufacturers as much as possible.
Can the polyethylene ruin the quality of my wine?
No. All trials indicate wine quality as good as or better than alternative systems.
How do I achieve oaking when I use Flextank products?
There are many oak products available to achieve this. They range
from staves to chips to dominoes.
Their use enables the wine maker to control the level of oak in the
wine.
Why should I use a Flextank Barrel Replacement?
Because it not only produces quality wine but greatly reduces wine production costs. You don't have to replace every five years, barrel hall capacity is enhanced and capital cost is greatly reduced.
Do I need to top the Flextank barrels?
No. The polyethylene is near impermeable to water and ethanol vapour. The only movement is oxygen ingress into the wine.
Is the polyethylene hard to clean?
No. Tartrates don't stick so lower rates of cleaning products can be used, then rinse with clean water.
